The proposed development is located in the area of Spitalfields alongside the street of Brick Lane and Fournier Street.
The current building was built approximately in the 1743‘s and during the 1970’s was converted into a mosque. The building is a Grade II* listed building and the adjacent former school build- ing (now used as an ancillary building to the mosque) is listed Grade II.
The proposed development is for the creation of an ablution area with direct access to the main prayer hall.
The new ablution will be contained within a regular shape which respects the existing windows and its architectural features.
Our aim was to use a material that could allow the original architectural features to be seen from the new ablution area and therefore create a relationship between the historic building and its contemporary extension. As a result of the design process we decided to use glass due to its obvious characteristics.
The result is a very humble glass structure that enables its users to contemplate the original architectural features of this beautiful listed building.
